Sarana Haeta
Sarana Haeata is a Māori-Australian artist based in Margaret River, Western Australia. Her painting practice explores themes of movement, surrender, and the emotional landscapes of the female experience. Deeply influenced by her role as a mother to four daughters, her work reflects the shifting rhythms of motherhood and the quiet resilience found within it. Working with layered and sketch-like markings that sway between abstract and figurative, Haeata’s paintings evoke a sense of transience and emotional depth, capturing moments suspended in motion.
Exhibitions and recognition
She has held several solo exhibitions in Australia, including at Rainbow Studios Sydney, Saint Cloche Gallery Sydney, and Michael Reid Northern Beaches, Sydney, and regularly exhibits internationally with Tappan Collective in Los Angeles, USA. Her work has been commissioned and collected internationally, including a project with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in collaboration with The Boston Globe. Her paintings are held in private collections worldwide, and her work has been featured in Vogue Living and Belle Magazine. She was also named a finalist in the National Emerging Art Prize 2025.
In her own words
"My paintings are a contemplation of movement and surrender. They capture the act of letting go, both physically and emotionally. Each piece becomes a moment suspended in motion - an echo of a memory or a capturing of different iterations of identity.
I have a deep love of exploring surprising colour relationships and using colour as a vehicle to take our eyes and minds on a journey through the painting. In the same way, my love of stories and storytelling underpins all my work, which for me is at the heart of the connection between the painting and the viewer."
