Rachel Wolfson Smith
Rachel’s relationship with landscape began early, growing up on a small farm in Maryland surrounded by woods and nature. Raised by naturalist parents who also worked as landscapers, she became fascinated by the delicate tension between letting nature grow freely and shaping it — between the wild and the cultivated.
After first studying landscape painting, Rachel gradually turned to drawing, finding in it a greater freedom to move beyond observation and construct landscapes of her own. Her large-scale works bring together fragments of real places, memories and imagined environments, exploring light, space and the emotional resonance of the natural world.
Where gardens become landscapes
Gardens remain an important source of inspiration. From native planting and dreamlike meadows to the ways nature is woven into cities, Rachel is drawn to landscapes that feel abundant rather than controlled — places allowed to evolve, grow and find their own balance.
Now based in Amsterdam, her work continues to explore the relationship between people and nature, and the environments we create together. For Bien Fait, this vision naturally moves onto the wall: imagined landscapes become immersive spaces, somewhere between drawing, garden and dream.
